An Insurance made just for your kids

I was just talking to @cleverindie on Twitter today and we were discussing the much-publicized if not scandalized healthcare governmental restructuring effort right now and how it is affecting us as consumers. The effect and side effect of having and not having health insurance is so crucial both ways. If you’re a healthy person with no apparrent medical issues, you’re immediate instinct is to opt out of not having an insurance to lessen your financial load but having a child is a whole different story.
I’m mainly concern about how not having an insurance will impact my child if she ever get sick and needed immediate medical attention. We had given up our family medical coverage since it was more than we can afford. We are blessed that we are all healthy but that doesn’t spare us, as parents, to continously feel a pang of fear towards our childs unexpected emergency care needs.
Of which sadly was heightened when she started school last week. As well-known, school is a notorious breeding ground for flu and germs, what with all the kids carrying it around, which makes your child’s risk of getting sick higher. I believe the School system had realized not just this threat but also the importance of getting an insurance for our kids as safety precaution but also something that is affordable. This could be the reason as to why they partnered with United Health Care Student Resources, who is providing insurance just for the kids.
Part of my daughters’ welcome kit included an insurance application form for UHCSR. Though I was a little surprised finding it in her kit, in a sense it also reminded me of how crucial it is to have one and gave me an option to reconsider getting an insurance for my kid because of the unique benefits they are offering which includes:
- The health plan offers protection/coverage for injury AND sickness, 24/7/365.
- UHCSR’s program is only available through many participating school districts and participating private schools. Nationally available through schools that belong to the Association of Christian Schools International.
- The Health Plan is available to K12 students from ages 5 – 18 (ages 4-18 in Texas)
- Designed to be affordable at $588 per policy year or $98 every two months. Parents can enroll their student at any point in the school year.
I like the idea that I can enroll my daughter anytime during the school year. This will give us ample time to reassess our finances and see how we can fit it in our budget. Our kids’ health comes first and that’s not negotiable. We used to be with Blue Cross Blue Shield NC and though we like their service, their fees just got too expensive for us. I don’t think they also have a targeted option intended for the kids in school like UHCSR would but I can be wrong. I’m glad that Mom Select invited me to participate in this campaign, I think it was the “sign” I was looking for to go ahead and reconsider buying an insurance for my daughter.

Wow! What a great program!
I was thinking that we had that sort of thing when I was in college, and was wondering why more primary schools didn’t offer such a thing!
Excellent that some are!
And so much more affordable than COBRA or an indie plan!
Yay!
Once our COBRA runs out we will be eligible to sign up our son for the kid’s group plan through the state (not medicaid- but a regular insurance plan with premiums- but less costly than indie plans and they cover more of his treatments/care). We just couldn’t risk dropping him from our COBRA plan to meet the eligibility requirements (you can’t have other health insurance at all) while they were processing our application. But at least is is a light at the end of the tunnel for now…
Hope something like what your school is promoting comes here soon!
Hugs! High Five!
